Valuing People - What Now?

As national and local structures change, the Valuing People Now strategy remains a priority for continuing the journey to achieving choice, rights and independence with people with learning disability.

These workshops continue the conversation and planning begun at the Valuing People What Now Conference and will focus on creative exploring, practical thinking and examples for moving forward.

A very successful and well attended Transition seminar was held jointly with the North London SEN Hub on 19 January at London Councls.

Presentations were given by:

Sarah Lilley, colleagues and young people (Sutton and Merton) on Person Centred Planning
Sara Merriman (Redbridge) on Single Assessment
Andy Minnion and Charlie Saward demonstrated the revised version of Click Start www.clickstart.org.uk

Discussion also took place around planning for the future of the network established by the joint London Hub seminars. Issues and suggestions made will inform further discussion.

This key event will bring together leaders in the field to explore the challenge of maintaining momentum and creating new opportunities within the context of broader policy change and reduced public sector budgets

Dame Philippa Russell, Chair, Standing Commission on Carers, Scott Watkin and Anne Williams, Co National Directors for Learning Disabilities, Linda Jordan, National Lead for Transition, Valuing People Team, and Joint Programme Manager, Getting a Life, Karen Flood, First Step and Rob Greig, Chief Executive, NDTi. Workshops on housing, employment, health, self advocate and family leadership and innovations in person centred reviews will all be included.

Valuing People Now
The Valuing People Team is proposing to run five sessions over the next few months.
Each of these will focus on a different topic and will be held on the following dates.

  • 17 June 2010 Friends and relationships
  • 22 July 2010 Planning for good health
  • 7 Sept 2010 Transition planning, personalisation and support planning

    Post 16 Opportunities
    Wednesday 28th April 2010; 10:00am – 3:00pm

    Opportunities available post 16 is a key consideration for young people in transition. This workshop will explore how local areas can develop opportunities in line with young people’s transition plans. We will hear feedback from the Getting a Life project as well as local initiatives from Newbury and Kent.

    The Self Directed Support
    Monday 22nd March 2010; 10:00am – 3:00pm

    With presentations from ‘In Control’ this workshop will explore Self Directed Support and its introduction in Children’s Services as part of the wider personalisation agenda for children and young people. In Control have been developing Self Directed Support with Local Authorities since 2007 and will present some of this work on the day.
